Hair bows are a very cute and girly accessory that can add just the right touch of youth and innocence to any small girl’s outfit. They have a very traditional look that invokes memories of a past time when girls looked like girls and not boys in with longer hair. They are not very difficult to make yourself. When you learn how to make hair bows, you can not only dress up the girls in your life, but might just discover a new hobby and even a potential part time business.
The internet has helped spur the growth of hair bow making as a hobby by providing both a source of instruction and a forum for the exchange of ideas. The recent trend toward uni-sex clothing for children has seemed to stir up a sort of grass root reaction among many people who long for a more innocent time when girls looked like girls and boys looked like boys.
There are countless styles of hair bows and many different ways to make them. The following is the instructions for making a type known as the Tuxedo bow and gives an example of just how easy it is to do. You need about one yard of 2 ¼ inch wide ribbon to make this one. The color is entirely up to you. You begin by holding the ribbon face up and measuring about one inch. Twist this one inch piece between your fingers for about a half turn and measure out four more inches. Then you fold the ribbon to form a loop. Be careful to hold it secure between your fingers when you make the loop. Then you twist the ribbon another half turn and make a loop on the other side.
When this is done, you create a second set of bow loops, this time using only three inches of ribbon. You follow the same procedure so that the smaller loops sit inside the larger ones. You can use a piece of floral wire about five inches wide to crisscross across the center of your bows to tie them down securely. You can trim off the excess ribbon, but leave about a quarter inch extending from the wired center in both the front and back of your tuxedo bow. You can use wire cutters to cut off the excess wire and then the only thing left to do is hot glue the ribbon to a large hair barrette and you are in business.
The Tuxedo Bow is just one of thousands of designs that are possible and you can always come up with more on your own. The point is they are easy to make and also inexpensive. It is a way to express your own artistic style and also add the perfect girly accessory to any young girl’s attire. It does not matter if they are for your own daughter, just as a hobby, or intended for a gift, a hair bow can be just the right thing.
